Finding Mr Paolo

out mid

It was about midnight - the thickest band of stars - even the psyche sits on the outer arm of the milky way

It must have been my mind playing tricks, the reflection of those stars or the lack of water. Even my robots detected the light movements of children. Small boys and girls digging in the dirt, pulling out shiny objects. Large, small, glittering like fairies wings from the sandy soil of The Absence.

What were they looking for - and were each of these trinkets the product of that search?

How did each little hand know that the completely random selection was what they had been looking for all along.

Eliza bounced along the dirt, tracking a few of the little ones, about one hundred metres out. As she reached within ten metres of on of the smaller children they simply vanished. But what they left were countless jewel like objects, like glittering futures taking root in the soil.

There will be a city here - the dawn of a new purpose, or ideals or a new way of looking at things.

Eliza looked, or perhaps sounded, dissapointed not to have been able to study the children more closely. I was glad of course - they had not been corporeal - but at least they posed no danger, save that to my sanity.

I hugged my blanket tighter and wondered when I would reach solid ground - I had been floating for too long in the cold. I needed human interaction

That’s when I heard the scream…
